Donated Blood is tested and separated into components benefiting 3-4 patients
The shelf life of Blood components Red Blood Cells (PRBC), Platelet concentrate (PC) and Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) is 42 days, 5 days and 1 year respectively. The storage conditions these components is also different; RBC at 2 – 8° Centigrade, PC at 20 -24° Centigrade and FFP at -30 to -80° Centigrade. These components cannot be stored in normal household Refrigerators.
It is safe to donate every 3/6 months. It is quick and safe, doesn’t hurt & saves 3 to 4 lives.
Blood is recovered very quickly in the body: Plasma volume within 24 - 48 hours, RBC in about 3 weeks, Platelets and White Blood cells within minutes.
1 out of 10 hospital patients need blood transfusion. Blood is required for Cancer patients, accident victims, blood disorder patients, surgery patients, pre mature Babies.
